Tesla to Open Mumbai Showroom by July 2025: All You Need to Know

Tesla is to open its first EV car showroom in India at Mumbai by mid-July 2025, marking its entry into the country’s booming automobile market.

Tesla to Open Mumbai Showroom

According to sources, Tesla Inc. is set to launch its showroom in Mumbai, India, and then later expand to New Delhi as well.

The falling sales report of Tesla cars in Europe and China inspired Elon Musk to hunt in the third-largest automobile market.

According to a Bloomberg report, Tesla has already shipped in Model Y rear wheel-drive SUVs along with Supercharger components, car accessories, merchandise and spares.

Tesla imported the car from its Chinese factory, while the remaining accessories came from the US and Netherlands.

Elon Musk’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February of this year, when he was on an official US visit, made it possible.

The Indian government’s high import tariff delayed Tesla’s long-awaited entry into the Indian automobile market. Tesla’s Model Y cars are priced at about ₹2.77 million (around $31,988) on import paperwork for India. The Indian government charges 70% import duties on fully built electric vehicles under $40,000. This results in an additional import duty of over ₹2.1 million per Model Y car.

AspectAmount / Description
Declared Value on Import Paperwork₹2.77 million (~$31,988)
Import Duties LeviedOver ₹2.1 million per car (consistent with ~70% tariff plus surcharges)
Landed Cost before Local TaxesSum of declared value (₹2.77M) + duties (~₹2.1M), significantly higher before GST etc.
Estimated Sale Price in IndiaMore than $56,000 before local taxes, registration, and insurance
US Ex-Showroom Price Comparison$44,990 ex-showroom; approximately $37,490 after federal tax credits
Final Sticker Price DeterminationSet by Tesla based on margin goals and positioning strategy in India
Implication for Out-the-Door PriceLikely well above $56,000 once GST (~28%), registration fees, and insurance are added

India introduced a policy to cut import duties to 15% for automakers that invest at least $500 million in local EV production within 3 years, but Tesla hasn’t shown interest and is sticking to an import-and-sell approach for now.

According to Reuters, Tesla Inc. is eyeing factory settings in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu.

Although Tesla’s launch in India is exciting news for EV car lovers, electric cars currently hold only about 5% of new car sales, with premium cars making up less than 2%.

Until Tesla can set up local manufacturing units in the country and arrange roadside charging facilities, cracking the automobile market in India seems a tough job.
