Tesla Launched Waymo-like Driverless Robotaxi
Tesla launched a driverless robotaxi on trial using its Tesla Model Y on June 22, 2025, in Austin, Texas, US.

CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, made this announcement using his very own platform, X.
People of Austin, Texas, saw Tesla Model Y cars completing their first trial rides. Sources say it charged a flat $4.20 per ride as an introductory fare. The fare is believed to increase in the future when Tesla launches its Cybercab.
A similar kind of driverless cab service called Waymo collaborated with Uber, and it’s running successfully in cities like Phoenix, San Francisco, LA, and Austin as well. Waymo plans to expand its service in Miami and Atlanta as well.
The launch of Tesla Robotaxi brought it head-to-head with Waymo-powered Uber.
Tesla Robotaxi uses camera-only vision technology along with its own in-house custom-designed chip called Full Self-Driving (FSD), which is Hardware 4 (HW4). It attains only Level 2 autonomy.
As Tesla launched the cab service on a trial basis, it is using its Model Y car for now.
In the near future, it’s going to launch a full-fledged Robotaxi service with its Cybercab powered by their upgraded AI5 processor and attain Level 4 autonomy.
